Things to know before you go

There are a few key things to consider before setting off on your Falls Creek Falls adventure. From permits to trail conditions, a little planning ahead will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Best time of year to visit Falls Creek Falls

The best time to hike Falls Creek Falls is in late spring through early summer, typically May through June

During this time, snowmelt from the surrounding mountains feeds the waterfall, creating a roaring, full cascade that’s truly awe-inspiring. The trail is also lined with lush greenery and wildflowers, making for an especially scenic experience.

Fall can also be a lovely time to visit, with colorful foliage adding a pop of color to the forested trail. However, the waterfall flow is generally lower later in the season, and the trail can become muddy or slippery depending on recent rainfall.

Winter is not recommended unless you’re prepared for snow, ice, and less accessible trail conditions.

How long does it take to hike to Falls Creek Falls?

Most hikers can complete the Falls Creek Falls loop in about 3 to 4 hours, depending on pace and how long you spend enjoying the waterfall viewpoint. If you’re hiking with kids or stopping frequently for photos, snacks, or rest, you may want to allow closer to 4.5 hours.

This hike is best done as a day hike and doesn’t require overnight camping. That said, there are plenty of dispersed camping areas nearby if you’re looking to make it a weekend getaway in the Gorge.

How difficult is the Falls Creek Loop hike?

Families with adventurous kids will find it doable, especially if you plan to take breaks along the way. Be sure to wear proper hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days.
